re:publica Dublin – Look How Far We've Come
We've only just celebrated our tenth anniversary at re:publica TEN, and now it continues – in Ireland! The very first re:publica outside of Germany is taking place today, October 20th, 2016. It's been a long journey for us, too: We started out out with a cozy gathering of just 700 bloggers in 2007 – back then we still addressed each other by our Twitter handles.
"The internet isn't a legal vacuum." That topic shaped the first years. The watershed then came in 2013, Edward Snowden revealed the mass surveillance. Since then the protection of the internet has taken centre stage - against surveillance, hate, sexism and racism. The re:publica founders stipulated "post love, not hate". One of the recent re:publica’s hot topics was how the digital citizen can assert their basic rights.
Today re:publica has grown to be Europe’s most important event on Internet and digital society. The most recent event in May 2016 attracted the staggering number of 8,000 participants to the STATION Berlin. That only goes to show that our long-standing concern is as important as ever – far more than just in Germany. And this is yet another reason for re:publica to reach out further across the European continent and organize this unique, one-day event in Dublin. We are hoping to further internationalize our community in general, and of course, popularize our original conference concept even beyond Berlin.
For this very first event in Ireland, re:publica Dublin is distributed across three different venues. We already had a great warm-up night with you yesterday, and are looking forward to more excitement, and an intriguing programme, today.
